The sport of sheep dog trialling has grown in popularity in Canada in recent yrs. Many locals will be familiar with the dog trials held each summer at Grass Creek Park, near Kingston, where dog /handler teams from all over Canda and the US come to compete and enjoy a beautiful venue.
This Aug 1 and 2 the 2nd annual Lansdowne Sheep Dog Trials will be held at the Lansdowne Fairgrounds.
The Border Collie breed was developed on the borders of England, Scotland and Wales centuries ago by the shepherds working the hills and lowlands. These dogs have been selected for generations to be willing, biddable working partners with an uncanny ,innate ability to work and control stock. As such they have no match in the canine world. They are one of the few dog breeds still selected on the basis of this working ability , not on apperance nor a breed standard. For dog enthusiasts there is no more beautiful or complelling sight than a well trained and talented Border Collie working sheep.
Come and bring the family, Aug 1 and 2, enjoy the dog trial , talk with some of the handlers and see some of these wonderful dogs work.
